quested to grant passports to all aliens who refuse
to volunteer in the niilitary service of the Confede-
rate States; in conformity with 'the provisions of
this act : Provided, however, that the provisions
of this . a6t shall. not extend or be applied to any
alien residing' in this State now exempt or who
may hereafter be exempted from military service.

SEc. 2. Be it further ciacteu, That all aliens
underthe age of'bighteen and over the age of forty  nsitdo
five years, shall be liable to do duty in the militia
of this State, on the same terms and in the same
nanner that native born citizens of like age are.
SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That the Governor
of this State be and he is hereby respectfully re-
quested to issue his proclamation to all persons
falling within the provisions of this act requiring
them to volunteer in the military service of the
Confederate States, or to leave this State as con-
templated and required by the provisions of this
act.
SEC. *4. Be it further enacted, That this act take
effect from and after the first of March, 1864.

OIIA.PTER XXXVII.
AN ACT amendatory of the Revenue Laws of this State.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of
the State of Mississippi, That hereafter, commencing
with the fiscal year 1864, the following taxes shall
be assessed and collected within this State, to-wit:
Twenty cents on every one hundred dollars of
money on hand and value of all credits; twenty
cents on every one hundred dollars in value of all
money loaned at interest by individuals, or em-
ployed by them in the purchase of Confederate or
other bonds, bills, notes or other securities for
money, and a like tax on the amount of gross sales
of goods, wares and merchandize, foreign or do-
