CHAPTER CCCVI.
AN ACT to increase the fee for apprehending runaway
slaves, in the cotuity of TunicA' Coahona, Bolivar;, Wash-
ington, and-Isaquena.'
SECTION 1. . Be it enacted by tle Legislature of the
State of k(ississippi, That any. person who shall
apprehed any runaway slave in the county of Ta-
nica, Coahoma, Bolivar, Washington ahd Issaqure-
na- and shall deliver said slave to the owner, or
his  gent, at his usuial 'place of residence of said
owner or agent, 'eithet in the county, in which said.
shall' haVe  been .arregted, or in any county
adjacent to the' same, shall be paid by said owner
or agent, 'the sum df fifteen dollars, or if thede-
livery be first made to the jailor of. the county in
which the arrest was made as is now provided by
law, he shall theni receive' the sum of ten dollars
for every slave belonging in or an inhabitant of
this State, and the sum of twdnty dollars for every
slave belonging out of this State; and if any
owner or agent shall refuse to niake payment as
herein provided for, any slave arrested and taken
to his place of residence as aforesaid, then it shall
be lawful for the person so arresting and offering
to deliver said slave to his owner or agent, to corn-
mit the same to the jail of the county in which
said owner or agent shall have his usual place of
residence, and on filing with the jailor his affidavit
stating such reluisal of payment, shall be entitled
to receive for every such slave, the sum of twenty
dollars. with two cents per mile for every mile ne-
cessarily traveled, after refusal of payment as
aforesaid : and the said fees on slaves committed
to -jail shall be collected, with the costs and
charges, as now provided by law.
