AN ACT to amend the several acts relating to the Charter of the City of Vicksburg. Of elec- SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of tion. the State of Mississippi, That the several acts re- lating to the charter of the city of Vicksburg be so amended, that hereafter, the Mayor of said city, one Councilman from each ward in said city, and the Assessor and Collector of said city, shall be elected by the qualified voters of said city, at the next municipal election, and hold their offices res- pectively for and during the term of two years; the city Marshal, the Superintendent and Physi- cian of the City Hospital, and all other officers deemed necessary to manage the municipal affairs of said city, shall be appointed by the Mayor and Council andiremovable at pleasure. SEC. '. Be it further enacted, That the Mayor shall receive for his services as Mayor, and ex-ofi- Salary of cio Clerk and Treasurer of said city, and receiver Mayor. and 'Treasurer of the Hospital fund of said city, the sum - f two thousand five hundred dollars per annum, from and after the next municipal election; and he snall have and exercise the powers of a Justice of the Peace in solemnizing the rites of marriage, and committing to the jail of Warren county, any runaway slave or slaves brought be- fore him, and receive therefor the same fees. 104
