AN ALT to punish negroes andimulattoes for rape committed on-Indians. SE'c. 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of .Missippi, That if any negro or mulat- to shall commit a rape, or 'attempt, to commit a rape, on any Indian woman, or on any Indian fe- male child, such negro or . mnlatto, on ,conviction .,thereof before the court, having jurisdiction of such offences, shall receive any number of lashes on his bare back, not exceeding one hundred, on each day, for five successive days, or suffer jdeath as the jury may determine. $EC. 2. Be it further enacted, if any free negro,.or mulatto, shall commit a ,rape, or attempt to commit a rape on any white woman, or shall have carnal knowledge of any white female child, under fourteen years old, with, or without hercon- sent, or shall attempt to have such knowledge of -such female child, any such free negro, or mulatto, so offending, shall upon conviction thereof, suffer death.
