CHAPTER C17.
AN ATUto aniond the Leveo Laws now In force in Conloma county.
SEC. 1. .Be it enacted by the Legislature of the
State of .Mississippi, That the seventh section of
an act entitled an act to amend the levee laws of
Coahoma county, approved 2d March, 1854, be so
siaves wials- amended as to provide that all malo slaves within
requirenHt fiVe miles of the levee may be required to perform
ok ou labor upon the levee at the demand of the levee
commissioner, or his agent, for six days in each
year, and in case of emergency for a greater pe-
riod if required, for which service the commissioner
shall be liable to pay out of the lcvee fund to the
person entitled to the labor of said slaves one dol-
lar and fifty cents per day for each full day's work
rendered, and if any person, when notified, shall
fail or refuse to furnish the hands required he shall
forfeit'and pay to the use of the levee fund of said
county two dollars and fifty cents per day each
for each day that the hand or hands required make
default, to be sued for and recovered by the com-
missioner in any court having jurisdiction.
SEC. 2. l1e it further cnacted, That the eighth
section of said act be amended so as to read: 'hat
Ireunty for if any person, by himself, his slave or employer,
oc.    shall ride or drive any horse, mule or ox, or shall
draw any cart, wagon, buggy, or other wheeled ve-
hicle, or fall any timber across said levee, or do
any other act calculated to destroy the same, such
person so offending shall forfeit and pay for each
offence ten dollars, recoverable for the use of the
levee fluid at the suit of the levee commissioner of
said county, before any Justce of the Peace of said
county, and shall also be liable to indictment as is
now prescribed by law for the malicious destruction
of levues.
SEc. 3. Be it further enacted, That hereafter all
Uve 1x. levee tax assessed by the Board of Polico shall be
payable on the first of March thereafter, and if
any person shall eijoin the collection of any levee
tax heretofore assessed, or hereafter to be assessed,
the Board of Police of said county on account of
any informality or any illegality in the act of as-
