months' notice of this act, and of the amendment to
the Constitution herein proposed, previous to the
general election in November, 1855, by causing this
act to be published in three newspapers printed in this
State; and at the said election, the qualified electors
-of this State, voting for members of the Legislature,
shall vote for or against the said amendment, in the
manner following, to-wit : Those voting for the said
amendment shall -write on their tickets the words
Elections. Amendment, and those voting against
it, the words,  Elections, no Amendment.
SEc. 3, Be it further enacted, That it shall be the
duty of the managers of the said election to enquire
of each voter before he deposits his ticket, whether
he is in favor of, or opposed to, saidamendment, and
whether he desires to vote thereon; and it shall also
be the duty of the sheriff of each county to furnish
the returning officers of each precinct in their several
counties, previous to said election, with a copy of
this act.
SEC. 4, Be it further enacted, That it shall be the
duty of the sheriffs, or other returning oflrers of
the several counties of this State, to make returns of
the votes given for and against said amendment, and
of the whole number of votes given for members of
the Legislature, in the several counties, to the Secre-
tary of State, to be by him laid before the next suc-
ceeding, Legislature and if it shall appear that a ma-
jority of those voting at said election for members of
the Legislature have voted for the amendment here-.
in proposed, the said amendment shall thereupon be
inserted by said Legislature in the Coustitution of
this State as a part thereof.
