CI-IAPTER 332.
AN ACT to amend the several acts of incorporation of the city
Natchez, and for other purposes.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the
State of Mississippi, That whenever the Mayor of
said city shall be temporarily absent or unable
from sickness to perform the duties of his office,
the Selectmen of said city shall have power, at
any regular or special meeting, to appoint from its
own number a Mayor pro tem., who, during such
absence or sickness, shall perform the same duties
and have the same powers, as by law are incumbent
upon and invested in said Mayor.
SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That hereafter the
Mayor and Selectment of said city, for the support
of its government and police, as well as for the
payment of subsisting debts, shall have power to
levy and collect an annual tax of two per centum
ad valorem, on each pleasure carriage, watch and
clock, saddle horse, carriage horse, race horse, and
horse kept for hire; and on the excess, when the
whole amount in value exceeds fifty dollars, of all
the gold and silver ware of each person; and of
one per centum ad valorem on each piano kept for
use; of one dollar and fifty cents on each slave
not less than five nor more than sixty years of age;
of one-fourth of one per centum on the amount
of all sales of merchandise sold on commission by
commission merchants or others; a tax of twenty
dollars per annum, and at that rate for any shorter
term, on each oyster and fruit shop; and a tax of
one-half one per centum ad valorem, on all real
property; on all merchandise sold by a regular
merchant, and on all other property in said city,
not hereinbefore enumerated, and that the said
Mayor and Selectmen shall have power to pass and
carry into effect all such ordinances and by-laws as
may be necessary for the annual levy and collec-
tion of said taxes.
