subject to work on public roads, to labor on the
streets of said town, not exceeding six days in any
one year, and the inhabitants of said town subject
thereto, may be compelled to work on any public
road that the board of police may direct, not to ex-
ceed two miles from the centre of said town.
SEC. 9. Be it further enacted, That the taxes
hereby authorized, may be levied, assessed and col-
lected under such rules and regulations as may be
prescribed by the President and Selectmen; and the
collection of such taxes may be by warrant, returna-
ble forthwith before any justice of the peace of the
county, or by distress and sale of the goods and chat-
tels of the person charged therewith.
SEC. 10, Be it further enacted, That a majori-
ty of said Selectmen shall constitute a quorum for
the transaction of business, and in the absence of the
President, they may choose a President pro tempore.
SEc. 11. And be it further enacted, That any law
or laws in relation to the incorporation of said town
heretofore passed, shall be, and the same are hereby
repealed.

CHAPTER 25.
AN ACT to incorporate the town of Carthage, in Leake county.
SECrLoN 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the
State of .Mississippi, That the town of Carthage, in
Leake county, is hereby incorporated, and that the
corporate limits of said town shall extend six hun-
dred yards in every direction from the court house in
said town.
SEc. 2. Be it further enacted, That every free
white male person living in said corporate limits be-
ing a qualified voter of the -county, and having resi-
ded within said corporate limits twenty days next
preceding an election for town officers, shall be a
qualified elector and eligible to any town office.
SEc. 3. Be it further enacted, That the sheriff
of Leake county (for the time being) is hereby au-
thorized, on the first Monday of March next, and on
the first of March, in each, and every subsequent
:year thereafter, to hold an election, in strict confor-
