CHAPTER 152.
AN ACT to provide for Leveeing the Mississippi River, in the County
of Tunica.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the
State of lississippi, That for the purpose of or-
ganizing a general system of leveeing the Missis-
sippi river, in the county of Tunica, in the State of
Mississippi, it shall be the duty of the board of
police of said county, immediately after the passage
of this act, tolappoint five or more levee commis-
sioners or inspectors, who own lands in said coun-
ty, to serve for the term of two years from the time
of appointment, and until successors are appointed
and qualified, whose duty it shall be to examine and
designate the lands where levees are necessary to
be erected, for the general good; to lay out the line
of said levee or levees, and determine their extent;
to contract for the building of the same as herein-
after provided for; to superintend the construction
of the same; to see that the work is properly exe-
cuted, and to prescribe the manner of doing it; the
time at which it shall be commenced and complet-
ed, and generally to do whatever else they may
deem necessary, in order to have the same com-
pleted in the best manner and at the least expense
to the public. That in locating said levee they
shall be governed by the general good, to protect
the greatest amount of land with the least expense,
having due regard to the permanency and security
of said levee, being at all places erected at a se-
cure distance from caving or falling in banks.
