WHEREAs, This legislature has been infor- med by a communication from the state of South Carolina, of the refusal of the governor of the state of Maine, to surrender to the au- thorities of the state of Georgia, certain fugi- tives from the justice of the latter state, on de- mand duly made of the governor of said state of Maine, by the governor of said state of Georgia: And whereas, this legislature has been further informed by a communication from the state of Virginia, of the refusal of the governor of the state of New York, to surren- der to the authorities of the state of Virginia, certain other fugitives from the justice of the latter state on demand duly made of the gov- ernor of said state of New York, by the gover- nor of said state of Virginia: And whereas, the offences charged against all said fugitives from justice, was larceny in feloniously invei- gling, stealing, taking and carrying away cer- tain slaves : And whereas, the council and co- operation of this and all the other slavehold- ing states of this Union have been asked in the premises, to the end that our common and pe- culiir interests may not be prejudiced by the action of our sister states not interested in, but opposed to the institution of domestic slavery Therefore, Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of ?&ississippi, That the right of the ex- ecutive authority of one state to demand fugitives from justice of the executive authority of anoth- 155
