Whereas, it is represented, that justices of the quorum have in some instances, solemnized the rites of matri- mony, under a belief that they were authorized to do so by law: Be it therefore enacted, That all marriages heretofore solemnized by justices of the quorum, in their respective counties, shall have the same validity and effect, as if such marriages had been solemnized by justices of the peace, or any other person lawfully exercising the authority to marry; and the issue of all such marriages.shall, to all intents and purposes, be deemed legitimate. AN ACT to reduce- into one, the several acts, concerning Slaves, Free Negroes, and Mulattoes. SEc. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Represer- tatives of the State of Aississippi, in General Assembly convened, That all persons lawfully held to service for life, and the de- scendants of the females of them, within this state, and such persons and their descendants, as hereafter may be brought into this state, pursuant to law, being held to service for life, by the laws of the state or territury from whence they were removed, and no other person or persons whatsoever, shall hpnceforth be deemed slaves. SEc. 2. Hereafter it shall be lawfil to bring into this state, and to.,hold therein, any slave or slaves, born within the Unit- ed 'States, or any territory thereof, except such slaves a'. at the time of their removal, were resident out of the limits a- foresaid, and such as shall have been convicted of any of- fence, and transported therefor, under the laws of this state, or of any other state, territory or district. SEC. 3. It shall not he lawful for any person whatsoever, to bring into this state, or to hold therein, any slave or slaves, born or resident out of the limits of the United States, orany slave or slaves that shall have been convicted of any offence, and therefor transported by the laws of this state, or oflany other state, territory, or district; and, if any person shall
