Style of ordinances; ordinances to be signed by Mayor; shall be published; Council may cause persons to appear before them; as to additions that may be made to said city. 11. Marshal to give bond and take oath; shall be City Collector, and possess the same power as Constable. 12. Council to appoint Street Overseer; cit- izens to be required to work on streets. 13. When general election of city officers to be held ; until first election, who shall be officers of city. Be it enacted by the General ./1ssembly of the State of M1issouri, as follows : § 1. That the inhabitants of the city of Butler included in the limits of the town of Butler, and all its additions as laid off and recorded in the Clerk's office of the county of Bates, in the State of Missouri, are hereby declared and constituted a body corporate and politic, by the name and style of the City of Butler ; and by that name and style shall have perpetu- al succession and a common seal ; shall sue and be sued, implead and be im- pleaded, defend and be defended, in all courts of law and equity having competent jurisdiction; may grant, lease, purchase, and hold property, both real and personal, within said city, and no other; and may do allother acts as natural persons. § 2. The corporate duties and powers of said city shall be vested in a Mayor, a Marshal, and six Councilmen, a Clerk, Treasurer, and City At- torney, who shall be chosen by the qualified voters of the city, who shall hold their offices until their successors are elected and qualified, and who shall be, at the time of their election, over twenty-one years of age, citizens of the United States; and the Mayor, Marshal, and Councilmen shall be householders within the corporate limits of said town. § 3. The Mayor and Councilmen shall constitute a Town Council, who shall fix and regulate the time and place of holding their stated meetings, of which the Mayor shall be ex oficio President, but shall not vote except in case of a tie. The Councilmen at their first meeting after their election shall choose from their own number a President pro tempore, who shall hold his office until the next election of town officers, and who shall preside at the meetings of the Town Council in the absence of the Mayor. § 4. Before entering upon the duties of their office, each member of the Council shall take an oath or affirmation to support the constitution of the United States, and of the State of Missouri, and to faithfully demean himself in office. The Treasurer shall, also, before entering upon the duties of his office, enter into bond with security, to be approved by the Council, in any sum not less than one thousand dollars, payable.to the State of Mis- CORPORATION.
