Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, as
follows:
§ 1. The inhabitants of the town of Miami, included within the limits
hereinafter described, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, are
hereby declared and constituted a body corporate and politic, by the name and
style of the city of Miami; and by that name shall have perpetual succession,
and a common seal, which they may chaage and alter at pleasure.
§ 2. The corporate limits of said city of Miami shall embrace the terri-
tory bounded as follows: Commencing at a point in the main channel of the
Missouri river opposite the mouth of Rockbridge branch ; thence up said
branch to where Edmond Brown's north line crosses it; thence west with said
Brown's line to the north-east corner of Win. M. Bell's land ; thence south
along Wm. M. Bell's line one fourth of a mile ; thence west on line of regu-
lar survey to the branch between Miami and Victoria ; thence down said
branch to the main channel of the Missouri river ; thence with said channel
to the point of beginning.
§ 3. The City Council of the city of Miami shall have power to extend
the corporate limits of the city over any addition to said city not included in
the present limits, whenever a majority of the inhabitants of said addition
shall petition to the City Council for that purpose: Provided, however,
That it shall first be submitted to a majority of the citizens of the city, and
if the majority be in favor of receiving said addition, then the same shall
become annexed to the city, form a part of the corporate limits thereof, and
the inhabitants and the property thereon shall thereafter be entitled to all
the rights and benefits of other inhabitants and property within the city, and
shall also be liable to assessment and taxation for city purposes, as if such
territory were originally included.
§ 4. The inhabitants of said city, by the name and style aforesaid, shall
have power to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, defend and be de-
fended, in all courts of law and equity, and in all actions whatsoever; to pur-
chase, receive, and hold property, real and personal, within the city limits,
and beyond the corporate limits, for burial grounds and other publicpurpos-
es, for the use of the inhabitants of said city, and again to improve, lease,
or sell the same for the use of the inhabitants aforesaid and the geieral
prosperity of the city; to hypothecate and improve all public grounds and land-
ings on the river; to protect or mortgage any real estate of the city, and
borrow money on the public faith thereof; and to do and perform all such
matters and things in relation to the property of the city as natural persons
could lawfully do.
