An act for the relief of Susanna Brown, MOtr Kerby, Eleanor Bow- fintg,, Uary Dorsey and Chloc Dart, oJSad~iP iuh'/'s county. 1Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Afaryland, That the jus- tices of the levy court of Saint Mary's county be, and the, are here-' by authorised and empowered at their annual meeting, if* the) shall see fit, and so long as they shall see cause so to do, to assess and levy on the assessable property of said county, such sum as they.may deem necessary for the support and maintenance of Susanna Brown, Mary Kerby, Elanor Bowling, Mary Oorsey and Chloe l)art, of said county, and that the said sum so levied and collected be paid by the officer collecting the same to each of ,he said persons respectivcly, or their order, in such proportion as the said justices inay dlirect. Be it enacted by the General Assembly oJ'41tryland, That an act, entitled, a further and additional supplement to the act, en- titled, An act concerning crines and punishments, passed at Decem- ber :cssion, eighteen hundred and twenty-one, chapter one hundred ., nincty-three, be, and the same is hereby repealed. 2. And be it enacted, That the directors of the penitentinry are Chmes re- hereby required and empowered to remit to the officers of the said mitted. ,penitentiary any charge or charges against said officers for their board for the year eighteen hundred apd twenty-two, any law to the con- trary notwithstauding; but it shall not be construed so as to permit the said directors to give or allow the officers of said penitentiary, any sum or sums in money or bank bills more than is or are allowed by law. WIEtRtEAs, it has been represented to this general assembly of by the petition of Stephen Bryan, a free man of colour, that he has been committed to the gaol of St. Mary's county, by virtue of a warrant from one of the justices of the peace for the isaidlI counts', issued at the request ot' a free woman of colour, charging the peiitioner of being the father of an illegitimate child; and uhcre- as it appears that the petitioner has been confined in the said gaol since February last, for want of that security required by law, which by his indigent circumstances he has no hopes of olitainlng; and wihercas it appears that he made application to the county court, at the two last terms for a discharge, which was refused him, on the ground of being without theirjurisdiction; therefore, Be it evtacted by the General Assembly oJ.
