No. 86.]                      AN ACT
Providing for the trial of slaves accused of capital crimes in the parish of Orleans.
Tribunal to try  SECTION 1. Be it enicted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
slamesaccusedor State of louisiana, in General Assemly convened, That such slaves as
may be acciused of capital crimes in the parish of Orleans, shall be tried
by a tribunal composed of the Judge of the First District Court of New
Orleans, and six citizens, slaveholders ini said parish, chosen and convoked
by said Judge.
Oath to be   SEC. 2. Pe it farther luacled, TC., iThai: lihe jurors shall take the fol-
taken by the loWing Ottill, to be administered by ilie Judge or Clerk of' said court:
I (A. B.), do solemuly swear, or allirm, (as the case may be), that I will
truly and impartially examilne and .idge the prisoner (or prisoners) who
may be brought before ile, according to law and thie evideucc, to the best
of my knowledge and ability, so help me Cod.
Verdict to be  SEC. 3. BC  fitrther -iackte, Y*C., Thit in order to Convict the accused,
onanimous   thue jury must Iiaimiously concur in a .verdict to be by them signed, on
which verdict the Judge shall cdorse the sentence.
Duty or the  SEc. 4. Be it further enacted, -c., That ihe judge who shall preside at
judge.      the trial of any slave, shall take no part in the deliberation of' the jury,
but shall, in conducting lite trial, exercise such powers and perform such
acts as are now exercised by other judges of tile State presidig on the
trial of' criminal cases.
Dutyof District  SEC. 5. lie i, furtlher etcted, ti*c., That it shiall he the duty of the
Attorney.   District Attorney, whein notified by the Judge, to attend and prosecute
on behalf of lhe State, and in default of such attendance it shall be lawfil
for the presiding Judge to appoint some attorney to not as prosecnor.

nt ou  en sentenced to any paunishnient shall not lie set at liberty until his master
liberty until la has paid ti1e cost of prosecution.

torney to be Judge to appoint an attorney to defend the slave or slaves thus accused,
aas tone: should the owner refuse or neglect to do so; in which case the Judge
rend.       shall fix the amount of compensation, which shall not exceed fifty dollars,
to be paid by tho owner to such attorney,
