No. 326.                 AN ACT
To suppress inore effectually trade and barter with slaves.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the Senote and House of Represen-
Penalty for tra. latives of the Stace of Louisiana, in General Assembly convened,
dvig with slaves That any person or persons who shall buy, sell, or receive of, to or
la touth!.ns  from any slave or slaves, any corn, hay, fod ler, ineal, spirituous li-
<luors or other produce or commodity whatsoever, without the con-
sent, in writing, of the master, owner, overseer or eiployet of such
slave or slaves, shall be held guilty of a high misdemeanor,and shall on
conviction thereof, be fined in a sum not less than fifty dollars, nor
more than five hundred dollars, and shall be inprisoned,in the parish
jail not less than one month nor more than twelve months, and shall
he liable to all costs of prosecution.
Sec. 2. Bc itfurther enacted, 4'c., That in the indictiment or in-
Allations9 of the formation for tile offience specified in the first section of this act, it
or'imat i< or n shall not be necessary to charge the kind or quantity of the produmce
or conunodity so bought, sold or received, nor the name of the slave,
nor the name of his, her or their owner, and on the trial of such in-
dictment, it shall not be necessary to prove the name or ownership
of such slave or slaves, but it shall le deemed and held suticient to
prove that such buying, selling or receiving, was of, to or from a slave.
lSal ho  Sec. 3I. Be it further enacted, 1-c., That if any slave shall be
looked upon' a see or found in any storehouse, warehouse, tippling shop, or other
prounup 0e,|  lace fitted up or kept for trading, unless sent by his, her or their
r.encm. naster, owner, overseer or employer, after the hour of nine o'clock
at night, or before day break in the morning, or on the Sabbath day,
or if any slave or slaves shall be found at any time in any of tho
aforementioned places, unless sent as aforesaid, where lie, she or
they shall have been permitted to remain for the space of five minutes
with the door of the aforesaid place closed. or if any slave shall lie
seen to carry into the aforementioned place or places, any article or
commodity supposed for sale and not bring the same out, or if lie,
she or they shall bring out of such place or places any article or
commodity which may have been purchased or received therein, or
if any slave, negro or mulatto, being a teamster or driver of any team,
cart, wagon or other vehicle, shall be seen to leave his team before or
near the door of any such storehouse, warehouse, tippling shop or
other place fitted up or kept for trading, an(d enter such place,and
there remain for the spaeo of five minutes, at. any hour of tile day or
