No. 201.]               RESOLUTION.
Whereas the recent development of riches in California, in our newly
acquired possessions bordering on the Pacific, and the consequent
increase of commerce which will flow therefrom directly into the
Preamble.     South and Southwestern States through the Gulf of Mexico, by the
Isthmus routes, and whereas from the geographical position of Lou-
isiana, and the States bordering on the Gulf, the shortest and most
expeditious routes from the Pacific to the States should be ascer-
tained and determined upon, and the fostering hand of government
given thereunto, which increases commerced; and whereas it has been
ascertained that freight, passengers, and the mails can be conveyed
by steamers from New Orleans to the Pacific, by the Tehuantepec
route in the short space of six days:

which empties into the Gulf of Mexico about one hundred and forty
miles below Vera Cruz, distance from New Orleans eight hundred
and twenty miles; whereas the distance from New Orleans to
Chagres is fifteen hundred and fifty miles.
Be it further resolved, 4c., That our senators and representatives
ask for an appropriation from the National treasury, and that a com-
mission be appointed for a survey of the route from the Gulf of Mex-
ico to the Pacific vid Tehuantepec in order to decide which route is
the shortest, most healthy and practicable of all routes across the
Isthmus.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-
tives of the State of Louisiana in General Assembly convened, That
all that portion of the parish of Orleans situated on the left bank of
the river Mississippi, shall be the city of New Orleans, and that all the
