Toregulate and define the fees to be paid by owners of runaway slaves for the taking
up and confinement of the same, etc.t
SeCTroN 1. Be it enacted, by the Senate and House of Representatives
aof the State of Louisiana, in General Assembly convened: That every
pysor taitog-person taking up a runaway slave shall immediately convey the same
r unawaybefore the nearest justice of the peace, who shall either commit said slave
eutyorJustleesto the parish prison or send him to the owner, employer or overseer, if
of        t' known, whoshall pay the person taking up the rates hereafter specified,
ronawpysiaves to wit: For taking up slave in the woods, six dollars; for taking up on the
Ratesoremu-road or plantation, three dollars; for mileage in all cases, going and re-
peration  for
the taking up turning, ten cents per mile; for magistrates committing, one dollar; for

ateso      while confined, twenty-five cents per day; for magistrate for receiving
herI,   proof of ownership, one dollar; for delivery to owner by jailor, filly Cents.
SEc. 2. Be it further enacted, etc.: That the jailor shall have every

Jaler. .est newspaper three times, making the advertisement as brief as possible,
. AdveruIng so as to give a full description of the slave confined, with his name, the
siaves in con.name ot the owner and place of residence, it known, or as given by
lneAti*t  said slave; and that on the owner's payment of the same the jailor shall
produce the printer's receipt for the paymant of the adertisement, or the
paper with advertisement contained therein.
SEC. 8. Be it firther enacted, etc.: That all expenses incurred by the
