Mary. SECTION 1. Be it enacted, by t.he Senate and lIouse of Representatives of the Stgte of Louisiana, in General Assenbly convened; That the police jurtes of the parishes of Lafayetto and St. Mary are hereby authorised and empowered to appoint as many overseers as may be necessary to the construction or koop- ing in order, any or dl the public roads in their respective pa- rishes; it shall furthermore be the duty of the police juries afore- said to defioe the duties of overseers; how long they shall be compelled to serve; how many days they may compel to work, the persons now' by the laws of this State subject to work on public roads. SECT. 2. Be it further enacted, etc. That the police juries mentioned in the foregoing section are hereby invested with full power to pass all laws and ordinances imposing fines on persons stopping up any of the public high ways, to fine overseers for refusing or neglecting their duties, and to fine any person or per- sons who shall refuse or neglect to work, or make his slaves work, at any time, when lie, she or they shall have three days notice of the same; and all fines may be collected before any court of competent jurisdiction and according to the laws now in exis- tence for the collection of fines in such cases in said parishes; and further, said juries shall have power to liass all laws and or- dinances ofwhatsoever nature which shall have for their object the laying out of public roads by commissioners, the construction of the Fame, or the keeping the public roads in good order in their respective parishes. SECT. 3. And be it further enacted, i*c.
