AN ACT
To explain the extent of the powers vested by law in the Mayor and
City Council of the city of New Orleans and for other purposes.
WyRE.s, divers controversies have arisen bofore tho courts of
this State, on the nature and extent ofthe powers Nested by law
in the Mayor and City. Council of New Orleans, and particu-
larly in regard to the quesIons whethr or not those powVrs
extend to the unincorporated faubourgs and other parts of the
banlieu of the said city, inthe same manner as they do over the
city proper, and it4 incorporated faubourgs.
SECT. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and the Hume of Re-
presentaives of the State of Louisiana, in Gencral Asmcibly
convened, That ,the Mayor and City Council of Now Orleans,
are hereby authorized, whenover they thiukjt proper to impose
Taxes on ve- asd collect for the beuefit of the Treasury of said city the sIame
kieler. taxes which now exist or may hereafter be imposed, first, on
all carriages, gigs, stages, carts, drays, waggons, timber wheels,
(diales),and other vehicles of whatever description or denomi-
natiQn they may be, which run on the streets of New Orleans,
or of its incorporated or unincorporated faubourgs, and which are
kept for hire, whether such vehicles be used for the transporta-
tion ofthings or of persons : 2d. on all carriages, gigs and other
vehicles of whatever description, and which are not kept for
hire, but for the private use of the owners thereof, and which
are used for he transportation of person alone; except how-
ever, all vehicles that transciently pass through the city of New.
