AN ACT
Concerning the levees and roads on the banks of the M,4ffippi and
for other purpbfes.
SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and Houfe of
Reprefentatives of the State of Louifiana in general afembly con-

SE c. 2. And be it further enacted ; That every
levee which fhall contain one perpendicular foot of water,
(mafe) and not above three feet, fltall have at leaft five feet
bate, for each and every foot in height. Every levee which
fhall contain more than three perpendicular feet of water and
not above five feet, fhall have at leaft fix feet bate for each
and every foot in height. Every levee which (hall contain
more than vive perpendicular feet of water and not above fix
feet, fthail hive at leaft feven feet bafe fr each and every foot
in height. Every levee which thall contain above fix per-
oendicular feet of water, fhall have at leaft eight feet bale for
each and every foot in height; the *lummit of every levee fhill
be of the breadth of one third of its bafe; finally, every levee,
fhall be of fuch a height, that after the inking of the earth,
it br ftill raifed one foot above the level of the water when
higheft.
Sac. 3. And be it further enatqed ; That in future
every new leveefhall be conifructed to wit: in places where
the bank is apt to tumble down, at the diftance of at leaft one
arpent from the waters edge ; and in places where the fame
inconvenience does not exift, at the diftance of at leaft fir ty
feet ; provided that in both cafes, the faid diftance fhall be
mealiured, from the fummit of the bank of the river.
SE c. 4. And be itfurther enated ; That the earth
which thall be employed for the repairs or conftrition of#
levee. fhall be taken at the diflance of at leaft twenty feet
from the bafe of faid levee, on the fide of the river
. SEc. 5. And be it further enaaed ; That every
new levee, or every portion of a levee which thall be made
anew, thill be fafcined on the fide of the river, either with
palietta or oth-rwife with piews.
