1860.                       CHAPTER 1046.
AN ACT to provide for the disposition of the estate of George Johnson, a frea
man of color; and also for the manumission of a Slave Emily, the daughter
of said Johnson.
WHEREAS, George Johnson, a free man of color, who
was murdered in McLean county, in this State, was the
owner, at the time of his death, of a tract or parcel of land,
in said county, containing about forty acres, conveyed to
him by Peter N. Johnson, and also some personal estate,
all of which will escheat to the Commonwealth by virtue,
of law; and whereas, the said George Johnson was the
father of a girl named Emily, now the slave of Samuel
Evans, of Said county; and whereas, the said Samuel Ev-
ans, the owner of said Emily, has signified his willingness
to manumit said slave upon the payment to him of nine
hundred dollars; therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth
of Kentucky:
§ 1. That the administrators of George Johnson, de-
ceased, are hereby authorized and required, after paying
off the debts of said Johnson's estate, to dispose of the
remainder of his effects, and after collecting the money, to
appropriate the sum of not execding nine huiidred dollars
to the purchase of the aforenamed Emily.
§ 2. That the surplus of said estate, after paying off the
debts thereof and expenses of administration, &c., shall
be set apart as a fund for transporting said Emily to Libe-
ria, and for her support after her migration: Provided,
That if said surplus shall not amount to a sum sufficient
to defray the expenses of transportation, and to support
the said Emily six months after her arrival in Liberia, then
the said administrators shall hire out the said Emily until
such sum shall be obtained: And provided further, That said
Emily shall elect, within one year from the time of its
passage, to avail herself of the benefit of this act.
§ 3. That said administrators are hereby required to exe-
cute covenant to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, with
sufficient security, before the clerk of the county court of
McLean county, for the faithful performance of the duties
required of them under this act: Provided, however, That in
the event said administrators shall fail to execute covenant
as aforesaid, within six months from the passage of this
act, the county court for said county shall appoint a com-
missioner to carry this act into effect, who shall be paid a
reasonable amount for his services out of the estate of said
decedent, to be fixed by the county court.
§ 4. That the administrators aforesaid, or the commis-
sioner, as the case may be, shall be required to report their
acts and doings to the ecunty court within two years from
the passage of this act, and shall file in the clerk's office
