1856.    dent and Directors thereof shall deem expedient, and
may execute such evidences of indebtedness as may be
deemed proper, and may pledge the profits, franchises,
rights, and credit of the corporation as security for any
loans, liabilities, or contracts which they may make; and
all bonds issued and made by said company for the pur-
poses aforesaid, shall be binding and obligatory upon such
company, and may be hypothecated or sold by said com-
pany at such rates of discount as the President and Di-
rectors thereof shall deem expedient.
§ 7. That the President and Directors of said company
By-aw.   shall have power to make all necessary by-laws, and reg-
late by by-laws and rules all matters not specially provided
for herein: Provided, Said by-laws and rules are not in-
consistent with law.
§ 8. That the business of said company shall be con-

a President, and shall elect or appoint such other officers
and agents as the by-laws shall prescribe.
§ 9. That the persons named in the first section of this
act shall be such Directors until their successors shall be
elected and qualified; and should any of said persons
decline to serve, the vacancy may be filled by some other
person appointed and selected by those serving as such
Directors.
§ 10. That an election for Directors of said company
Elections.  shall be held on the first Monday in January of each year,
at such place and under such regulations as may be pro-
scribed by the by-laws of said company.
§ 11. That said company shall be liable for the value
Uabifty.  of all slaves, who by being permitted to pass over said
bridge shall escape from his or her owners, and shall
have full power to enact and enforce all such regulations
as they may deem necessary to prevent the escape of
slaves over said bridge.
§ 12. That this act shall be taken to be, and is hereby
declared to be a public act, and shall be in force from
and after the first day of March, 1856.
