SEC. '2. Be it further enacted, That there shall be allowed 1840.
one additional Constable to Madison county, to reside on the
ridge between Silver creek and Paint Lick creek, and between
Goggings' Ferry and Centerville meeting house.

CHAP. 194.-AN ACT to amend the penal laws of this Commonwealth.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth
of Kentucky, That any free negro, mulatto, or Indian, who
shall hereafter harbor or conceal a runaway slave, or shall
hereafter entice away any slave from the service or employ-
ment of his or her owner or employer, or shall assist or advise
any slave to runaway or to depart from the service of his or
her master or employer, against his or her consent, shall,
for every such offence, be liable to be indicted and punished
not exceeding thirty -nine lashes on his or her bare back, at
the discretion of a jury ; and shall, moreover, be liable to the
owner of the slave for damages.

CHAP. 195.-AN ACT allowing the Trustees of New Castle to open an alley.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth
of Kentucky, That so much of the east end of the Public
Ground in the town of New Castle as is now uninclosed,
amounting to seventy feet, and including the well thereon, be,
and the same is hereby added to the alley adjoining said
ground, and to be considered as part of said alley, (or street,)
and to be under the control of the Trustees, for the use and
benefit of said town: Provided, that the County Court of
Henry, by an order on their records, shall first consent thereto.
Approved February 4, 1840.
CHAP. 196.-AN ACT allowing additional Justices of the Peace to the coun-
ties of Graves and Vayne, and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth
of Kentucky, That there shall be allowed to the county of
Graves, one additional Justice of the Peace to the number
now allowed by law.
