SEc. 2. That the Newton Society is hereby empowered to    1839
sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, answer and be an-
swered, defend and be defended, in all courts of law or equity  May sue and
in this Commonwealth; and shall be, and is hereby vested with be sued, &c.
all privileges and powers which by law are incident to corpo-
rations of similar character; also to make, have and use, a
common seal, and the same to break, alter, or renew at plea-
sure; also, to form, establish, and put in execution, such by-
laws, ordinances and regulations as shall be necessary and lMypassby-
convenient for the government of said corporation, and which
are not contrary to the constitution and laws of this Common-
wealth; and generally to do and execute, all and singular, the
acts necessary to carry into effect the objects of this charter.
SEc. 3. That the members of Eaid Society, on the first Fri-  President,

by-laws, shall meet, and elect a President, Secretary, Treasu- &c.
rer, and such other officers as the society may think proper,
for the government thereof, whose terms of office shall expire
at such times as shall be hereafter prescribed in the laws and
regulations governing the same.
SEC. 4. The President elect, for the time being, shall have  Pres'dt may
power, and is hereby authorized to appoint, from time to time, appoint corn-
committees, officers and agents as shall be necessary and con- mittees, &c.
venient to carry into effect the objects for which this corpora-
tion is established; and to levy and collect taxes,fines,forfeitures  May levy &
and contributions, in conformity with the laws of said society ; collect taxes,
a majority of the members at any one time belonging to the
society, shall constitute a quorum.

CHAP. 1301.-AN ACT authorizing the sale of real estate of Hiram Spurlock,
deceased, and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, it is represented to the General Assembly of the
Commonwealth of Kentucky, that Hiram Spurlock, of Floyd
county, departed this life, greatly embarrassed; and that his
personal estate has-been exhausted in the payment of his debts;
and that recently, a decree has been rendered against said es-
tate, for a considerable amount, and that there is now no as-
sets to discharge said decree: whereas, also, it is represented
that there is a certain negro man, by the name of Frank, who
is remarkably dangerous and unmanageable, and that he has
given the administratrix great trouble and expense in his man-
agement-for remedy whereof,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth
of Kentucky, That it shall be lawful for the administratrix of Bill in ch'ry
said Hiram Spurlock, deceased, to file her bill in the Floyd may be filed.
