port. Your committee recommend the adoption of the following
resolutions:
Resolved by. the General Assembly of the Comnonwealth of Zen-
tucky, That they view with deep and friendly interest, the exer-
tions of the American Colonization Society, in establishing an
asylum on the coast of Africa, for the free people of color of the
United States; and that the Senators and Representatives in
Congress from this State, be, and they are hereby requested to
use their best efforts to, facilitate the removal of such free per-
sons of color as may desire to emigrate from the United States
to the colony, and to insure to them the protection and patron-
age of the General Government, so far as they shall be deemed
consistent with the safety and interest of the United States.
Resolved, That the Governor be requested to transmit a copy
of the foregoing resolution to each of our Senators and Represen-
tatives in Congress.
Approved, January 22d, 1827.
A resolution concerning the establishment of a mail line betwen Louis,(ille
and Now-Orleans, on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.
Resolved, That in the opinion of this Legislature, it woultd be
expedient and of great public benefit for Congress, in conjunc-
tion with the Post Office Department, to establish a mail line on
the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, to be carried by steam boats,
three times a week, between Louisville and New-Orleans, and
to be extended as high up the river-Ohio as Wheeling, Virginia,
when in the opinion of the Postmaster General, the department
requires it: and that our Senator's in Congress be instructed, and
our Representatives be requested, to use their influence and ex-
ertions in carrying into effect the object of the foregoing resolu-
tion.

a considerable number of slaves, which are secured to them by
the constitution and laws of tdiis State as property, and owing to
our proximity to the possessions of his Brittannic majesty, in the
p~rovinces of Canada, many of them are enabled to make their
escape from the United States, and enter the limits of these pro-
