importation and emancipation of ,Slaves.

the Cotinratealth ol Rentiutkh, 'I iat froim ani a.Ii  o ilave t
ter the passage of this act, nt slave or slaves shall ti;,
lie imported into this coinmonwealth.
Src. 2. lIe it further enacted, That every per-
son hereafter importing slaves into this common-
wealth, contrary to this act, shall ferfeit and pay rpu.
th sum of six hundred dollars, for every slave so
imported : And every person selling or buying ary
such slave, shall, in like manner, forfeit and pay the Nualurr buy-
suin of two hundred dollars, for every such slave so ig f, MUing.

tll indictment or information in any court of record, to e,'.
and shall belong to the commonwealth, and be paya-
ble into the treasury thereof. An indictment for a.
ny of the penalties inflIcztd by this act, shall nut be
subject to any shorter limitation than five years
from the time of the commission of the oflence; and
such indictment may lie  ound oil   the infio;mnation
of any one of the grand,*uly, or any other credible
person, and no prosecutor shall be neessary in said
indictment. On the trial of any such indictment, if V,,t
it be proved on behalf of the cmnmonwealth, t hat uiv'.
the defendant or defendants have brounght to this
state any slave and sold the same, it shall he stuf-
ficient to sbiject such del'umlaut or deft'ndagts to
the penalties inllicted by I his act. unless lie, shi or
they can prove to tlm satistle'mliol of' the jury, that
lie, she or they have taken the oath hereaftel' re-
quired, anl have rot Tiolated the saei; and that lie,
she or they have removed tvom atny othitr state or
territory of the United States, and have become a
permanent resident of this state ; or that he, she or
they, having been residents of tiffs state, acquired
or derivied title to the slave or slaves in question,
