An Act to add an additional Section to the thirteenth Division qf
the Penal Code.
3. SEcIoN I. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre-
Penal code. sentatives of the State of Georgia in General Assoeubly met, and it
is hereby enacted by the authonty of the same, That from and after
the passage of this Act, it shall not he lawful for any MAerchant,
AV esee. to Tradesinan or Shopkeeper, by himself, his Clerk | ClerksI or
18s oni Agent to have closed the front door or doors of his store or shop
whilst engaged in selling to, buying frm, or in any wise trading
with a slave or slaves, free persons of color; and an y person guilty
tradingwila ofl a violation of the provisions of this Section, shall be guilt of a
negros ;1i mIsdoioanor, and on indictment and conviction thereof
tne to 00a line of not less than one hundred, nor more than two hundred
dollars, one half of said line to be paid to the informer, and on iail-
ure of the person committed (convicted ?) to pay said line, he shall
a, r t'.be imprisoied in the conmnon jail of the county at the discretion
of the Con rt.
4. SEc. IH. And be itfurther encted by the atlority aforesaid,
That if any slave or slaves or free person of' color shall be found in
any store or shop, or going into o' comning (ut fromt the same, with
the front door or doors thereof closed, (except for ingress or egress)
coda 4cit shall be taken and received as presumptive evidence against the
evidence. ios80 or persons keeping the said store or shop, of a violation of
the lirst Section of this Act, which presumption may be rebutted
by any other circumstance in fivor of the accused.
.5 Six. III. And he it further enacted, That all haws and parts
of' laws militating against this Act he and the same are hereby re-
pealed.         M
