And, iiiasmuch as it is befiting a gratefl people to testify, in a
becoming manner, their regret for this mournfil, though not
unexpected event, in which our country laments the loss of
one n1o less distinguished by the splendor of his military
achievements,than the wisdom and eventful importance of
is civil services-
Be it therefre rcsolved by the Senate and House of Represent-
alives, Tlhat in the death of Andrew Jackson, the people of this
Union have lost the man who, if not equal in civil and milita-
ry achievements, was second only to him whose memory is em-
balined, as first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts
and affections of his countrymen, (a shrine more durable than
sculptured marble or consecrated urn,) the stirring incidents
and important events of wliose life have stamped the impress
of his greatness upon the undying history of the times, to ava-
ken proud reminiscences in the mind of the living, and grate-
fil oblations in the learts of succeeding generations.
ResolcL'd, That we approve of the proposition to erect, at
Washington city, by the generous ofleriig of a nation's grati-
tude, a suitable Monument, commemorative of his civil and
military fame.
And( bc it further resolved, That his Excellency the Govern-
or be, and is hlcruby autlhorized and requested to contract
with a suitable artist for pailting, inl a style and finish similar
to those of Washington and Jefferson, a full length likeness of
Andrew Jackson, to be deposited in the Senate Chamber.
And, cntertaining a proper estimate of the high ciaracter and
distinguished services of tile Honorable William  II. Craw-
ford, deceased-
Resolred, That his Excellency the Governor be, and he is au-
thorized to contract with some .skilful artist, for the painting of
a portrait of said deceased ,Patriot and Statesman, at ltil
length, and have the same placed in the Senate Chamber.
