of law*s militating against this act, be and the same are here-
by repealed.

AN ACT to amend the Charter of the city of Columbus, and
to anond an act entitled an act to amend the several acts of
the Leislature of this State incorporating the city of Colum-
btus, in the county of Muscogee, and to lay off said city into
Wards, and to point out the manner of electing the Mayor
and Aldermen thereof, passed in the year eighteen hundred
and thirty-seven.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre-
sentatives of the State of Georgia, in General Assembly met, and
it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That from and
after the passage of this act, it shall be lawful for the citizensof
the city of Columbus to elect by general ticket a Mayor and
twelve Aldermen, which election shall be held at the court-
house in said city, on the first Saturday in January in each and
every year. Provided, That there shall be two Aldermen elect-
ed for, and residing in each Ward as now designated by law.
And provided further, That each voter shall designate upon
his ticket the two persons voted for as Aldermen for each Ward;
and the two persons, residing in each Ward, receiving a major-
ity of all the votes given in said city for Aldermenof eachpar-
ticular Ward, shall be declared elected; and said Mayor and
Aldermen, when so elected,shall ho! I their office until their suc-
cessors are elected and qualified.
SEc. 2. Be it flrther enacted, 11at no person shall be eligi-
ble to the oflice of Mayor or Alderman of the city of Columbus
or shall be eligible to vote for any officer authorized to be elect-
ed by this act,who is not a citizen of the State of Georgia,and
who shall not have resided one year in the State, and at least
six months in the city of Columbus immediately preceding the
election at which he may vote, and shall have paid all legal
corporation taxes for which he may be liable; and the Mana-
gers, or one of them, of the said election, shall have full power
and authority to administer to persons offering to vote at said
elections, the following oath or affirmation: I - do solemnly
swear,or affirm, as the case may be, that I am a citizen of tle
Stateof Georgia, that I have resided in said State twelve months
and in tile city of Columbus six months immediately precediig
this election, and am entitled to vote at the same; and that I
have paid all legal corporation taxes for which I am liable, and
which have been legally required of me-So help me God-
wheih oath may be administered in the third person.
