assented to December cleventh, eighteen hundred and
forty-one, so ftr as relates to the Port of Savannah.
SECrioN 1. Be it enacted, t-c., That the above recited act
be, and the same is hereby repealed, so thr as relates to the
Port of Savannah.

AN ACT to provide for the method of collecting rewards
wvhich may be oflered ibr the apprehension of iunaway
slaves, who may hereafter be lodged within any of the
jails of this State.
WH1EIEMS, in niny cases iii which rewards are offered for
the apprehension of runaway slaves, and said slaves are
lodged in jail, the same are discharged by the jailer from
his custody, without the consent of the person so appre-
hendinig the slave, whereby the reward so offered becomes
wholly lost to them ; lbr remedy whercof:
SEcrioN 1. Be it entcld by the Senate atnd House of Rep-
rerentatires of the State </ Georgia, in General Assembly net,
and it is hlrchyl enicted by the aiutlioritU (f the samc, That friom
and aliwr the passage of' this net, when any runaway slave
for vhom a reward has been ofiered by his owner, employer
or any oilier person, shall be ppwhlended and lodged in any
of the joils of this State, it shall be the duty of' the jailer,
and he is hereby authorized to retain possession of said slave
until the reward so oflred, shaill be paid, or good security
given the the payment of the snmne
SEc. 2. And be it irther enacted by the authority oforesaid,
That if' any jailer shall discharge a slave so apprehended,
without collecting the reward so oficred, or taking good se-
curity, in accordance with the foregoing section of this act,
and by such refusal or neglect, the said reward shall be lost
to the person so apprehending the said slave, such jailcr and
his seCurit ies shall be liable in an action at common law for
the aniount so lost, by the refusal or neglect of the jailer to
