SLAVES AND FREE PERSONS OF COLOR.
AN ACT to regulate shaves and free persons of color in the
counties of Mclntosh nd Liberty.
SECTI IN 1. Be it eniacted by the Senate nid IIuise of Repre'-
sentatircs qf the State of Gorgia, in Gen,'ral Assembly met,
and it is hech enacted by the atithority of thc same, That
from and after the passage of this act, it shall not he lawful
for any free person of color or slave to keep) a house of en-
tertainment, or to vend any goods, wares, lerchainldize,
spiritnous liquors or provisions, for their own profit, (other
than w,'hiat is allowed by the existing laws of the Statc)
within the limits of tile counties of Mintosh anl Liberty.
Svc. 2. And be it jurther cnacted, That no slave shall be
allowed to hire his or her time from his or her owner or
manager; nor shall any sIve he allowed to work or carry
on any traflic upon his or her own ncount, or for the pur-
pose of procuring a livelihood, or raising money to pay his
or her hire wages, within 1he limits afiresaid, except by
written permission froin their owners or employers, who
shall reside in the limits of each county aforesaid.
SEC. 3. Alld be ;/ 1ithrier eaccdl, That aliv wvhitc person
offending against the provisions of this act, shall he liable
to be prosecuted or indicted befbre the Superior Court, for
such offnce ; and on conviction thereof, shiill fiorfeit and
pay a line of $100 for ech and every such violation, one
half to be paid over to the Commissioners of Poor Schools,
and the other half to the informer or prosecutor.
