SLAVES, &c

And be it further enacted, That it shill be the duty of the
Sheriff to write to the owner of such slave immediately on
receiving hint in jail.

AN ACT to regulate slaves and free persons of colour in the
counties of Ricinnond and Hancock.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of
the Stale oj' Gcorria in General Assembly met, and it is hereb3
cnacted by the authority <f Ie same, That from and after
the passage of this act, it shall uot be lawful for any slave or
free person of colour, to keep a house of entertninment or
to vend goods, wares, merhandize, spirituous liquors or pro-
visions for their own profit, other than what is allowed by
the existing laws of this state, within the limits of Riachnond
and Hancock counties.
2. And be it farther enacted, That no slave shall be
allowed to hire his, or her time, from his or her owner
or manager, nor shall any slave le allowed to work or carry
on any traille upon his or her own account, or for the pur-
pose of procuring a livelihood or raising money to pay his or
her hire or wages to his or her owner or employer in said
counties ; except such as may be Ilarbers, who shall be per-
mitted to hire their time, and rent shops for carrying on their
busi ness.
3. And be it further enacted, That it shall not be law-
ful for any person having the managmnent or ownership of
any slave or slaves, to suffller such to hire his or their own
time, or to go at fargo seeking employment, at the discretion
of such slave or slaves, within the limits aforesaid, nor shall
