handle is hein.slavery/ssactsga0184 and id is 1 raw text is: AN ACT to amend an act entitled an act supolementary to an adt mo-e eectually to enforce an act entitled an act prescribing the mode of manumitting slaves in this State; and also to prevent the inveigling and illegal carrying out of the State persons of color, Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representaties of .the State of GeoPgia in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That from and after the pas- sage tt this act, it shall not be lawful for ihe clerk of tile inferior court of , ny county of this State to issue any certificate of registry of frecdom to any colored person, but upon affidavi first made by the guardian of such person of color, that he or she is a free person of color duly manumitted agreeably to the laws of this state; and that he or she is about to remove into another county. or beyond the limits of this state, or about to depart in the capacity of a servant to some inhabitant of this state. Sec. 2. And be itfarther enacted, That previous to the granting of'. certificates of regitry of freedom, it shall be the duty of the clerks of the superior and inferior courts of the several counties of this state, to give ten day4 notice in one of the public gazettes or in some other public manner of the name of the applicant or applicants, his age, &c. and of his, or her or their guardian or guardians. Sec. 3 Andbe itfurther enacted, That such certificate of registry of freedom when issued as aforesaid, shall contain an accurate des- cription of the person, age, occupation, and residence of sucts person of color, and that the clerk so issuing the same shall be entitled to haveand receive from the guardiatn of such person of color the suin of five dollars; and should any free negro or person of color trans- fer his or her certiicate of registry of freedom obtained as aforesaid, to any slave or free negro~or other person of color, such free negro or pecson of color so offendity shall be punished h. such fine, imprion. ment, and other corporeal punishment, as any court competent to try slaves and free persons of color may in its discretion think proper to inflict.
