RIESOLUTION in relationt to Lietu. General Grant, United States Army,
and the removal of the colored troops.
Be it resolved by the Senate and ]1ouse of' lepresentatives of
aeuolUoll M. the State, of Florida in General Assembli, eonvened, That this
qutl General Assembly most heartily concur in the statement of Liout.
oro ,Iope - Gen. Grant, United States Army, in his letter to the President of
the United States dated December 18, 1805, that the good of the
country reuires that the force kept in the interior, where there
are many 11 reedmen and elsewhere in the Southern States, should'
all be white troops, for the reason as stated by him, that the
presenee of black troops, lai~ely slaves, demoralized labor, both
y their'advice, and furnishing-in their cmps a'rcsort for the
Freedmcn for long distances arotd ; and in the further state-
ment of Geu. Grant in said letter, that the re presence of a
military force o white troops w ithout regard to numbers is sul-
ciemit to maintain order. We thierclbrb most respectulyin:
accordance with the views of this distinguished soldier, request
Major Gen Foster to have removed it' possible the colored troops
f'onrthe State anddat any rate from dite interior. The experi-
ence of the people of' Florida has been~i that the demnoraliation
of labor has been in almost exact proportion t the proximity of
the freedmen to the colored troops, an also rspecttlly. request
