AN ACT to tax slaves brought into this State for hlre.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted y/ the Senate and House of Represen.
tatices of the State of Florida in Gencral Assembl!y convened, That
Slaves for hire liereaflcr no slave or slaves shall be brought or sent into this State
tai o.    from any place beyond the limits thereof, for the purpose of being
hired out, without a license therefor being first taken out by the own-
er or master of' said slave or slaves; or the agent of such owner or
master, in the manner provided by law for taking out licenses, and
the tax for such license shall be twenty-fire dollars for any such slave
so brought or sent, besides the fees of the clerk for issuing such li-
cense, which fees shall lie collected by the Sheriff' at the same time
the tax is collected.
See. 2. Be itfirther enacted, That if nny slave shall be brought
renaity.    or sent to this State, and be hired out Without a license being taken
out as provided in the foregoing section, the owner or master thereof'
shall be liable to a double tax, and the said slave shall be liable to
be seized by the Sheriff'and hired out until the said double tax and
all expenses and fees are realized fi'om the hire.
Sec. 3. Be itfurther enacted, That the said license shall author-
..Lienee, where ize the said slave to le hired out, within the county where the tax
applicable.  is paid, for one year or any less time, but for no longer time than one
year ; and a full tax of twenty-five dollars shall be paid, however
short the time for which said slave is hired.
Sec. 4. Be it ftrther enacted, That the provisions of this Act
shall be applicable only to the counties of Franklin, Escambia and
Monroe.

SucTI N 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and ifouse of Represen.
tatives of the State of Florida in General Assembly convened, That
Ca pis  Writ whenever for the want of property there shall. be a failure to collect
o     -     taxes due this State, from any free negro or free mulatto residing
therein, and in cases when any free negro or free mulatto shall
lie in dcfhult for non-performance of road work, and there shall be a
failure to collect the amount adjudged against him or her for such
default for want of property out of which the same shall be collected,
it shall be lawful for any Justice of the Pence to issue a writ of capias
ad satisfaclendum, against such free negro or free mulatto, for the
amount of taxes so due, or for tIme condemnation money in such de-
fault, together with all costs thereon taxed.
