(No. I) Instrnctions of Governor Gayoso, for the adilnistration of Posts and the distrilution o' La€nl. Instructions to be observed hy th!e commandants of the posts ir this province, for the admission of' new settlers.: 1. If the new settler conhes from another post in the province, where he ha4 obtained a grant of'land, no other ;rant shall he made to him ; and it' he undertakes to fix himself down, he must huy lands, or produce my special permission fur the grant ; and in order to deterimine whether lie has before obtalned land or not, the comman-. dant of the post from which he goes, shall express it in his passport. S. If the new settler is a stranger, and is not a fariner, nor married, nor has property in negroes, merchandize oil money, lie shall have no right to solicit a grant of lands, until lie has.remained fou' years, conducting him- self well, in some honest.and useful occulation. 3. Artisans shall be fully protected, but no land shall be granted to them, until they have acquired property, and have lived three years in tile exercise of their art or profession. l 4. To no unmarried emigrant who has not a trade or profession, shall lands be granted, till after the expiration of four years ; and then only' ol his sh ewhig that lie has been without interruption, honestly employed in tLhe cul- tivation of the eartit, without which necessary circum- stance, he shall not be entitled to a grant. 5. If any person, as described in tie lIst article, after having lived in the country two yeai s, shall obtain a re- commendation from a farmer of honesty, who shall be willing, from his industry and application, to give him his daughter in marriage, as soon as the narriage is ac- complished in due form, he shall be entitled to receive a grant of land, agreeably to the terms contained inl this in- struction.
