Monticello.
SECTIoN 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of
Arkansas, That the boundaries of the town of Monticello in the
county of Drew be extended so as to embrace within the limits of
said town the whole of section twenty-six and the north half of
the north half of section thirty-five in township twelve, south of
range seven west, and that all power, authority and jurisdiction,
immunities, franchises and liabilities of every kind that are now
according to existing laws, statutes and ordinances applicable, or
that may hereafter become applicable to said town, and the in-
habitants thereof, be and the same are hereby extended over the
territory of said town as herein designated.
SF:c. 2. The inhabitants of said town shall be a body politic
and corporate by the name of the mayor and aldermen of Monti-
cello, and by that name, they and their successors shall have
succession for ninety-nine years, may sue and be sued, plead and
bo imnpleaded, defend and be defended in all courts of law and
equity in all matters and actions whatsoever and may grant,
purchase, receive and hold property, both real and personal, and
may lease, sell and dispose of the same for the benefit of said
town, and may do all other acts as natural persons, and may have
a common seal and the same may break, alter and renew at
pleasure.
SEc. 3. For the preservation of peace and good order, and for
the better ruling and govorning the said town and inhabitants
thereof there shall henceforward be a mayor, eight aldermen,
a recorder and a town constable, who shall be elected annually by
the inhabitants of said town, qualified to vote for members of
the General Assembly, and who shall have resided in said town
six months next preceding such election, and the said oflicers
shall hold their offices for one year and until their successors are
elected and qualified, and the said mayor shall be commissioned
by the governor of the State.
Sc. 4. No person shall be eligible to the office of mayor, alder-
derman, recorder or town constable who shall not be a qualified
voter for members of the General Assembly, and be an inhab-
itant of the said town at the time of his election, and have re-
sided therein for six months next preceding such election.
Smr. 5. The mayor, aldermen, recorder, town constable and
other ollicers who may be elc tel or appointed, shall befo-o en-
tering on the duties of their respective ollices, take and subscribe
an oath to su pport the e instituition of the Confederate States and
of this State, and faithfully to demean themselves in office, which
oath may be administered by the mayor of said town, or any
judge or justice of the peace of Drew county.
SEc. 6. The recorder, before entering upon the duties of his
