case they may choose to make application therefor, and they
or either of them shall execute their receipts to the Treasurer

SECTION                      SECTION
. Runaway slaves committed to jail to S. Duty of keeper of Penitentiary as to

Sic. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of
Arkansas, That the sheriffs of the different counties of this State,
be, and they are hereby required, when any runaway slave is
committed to jail under the provisions of the act to which this is
amendatory, to retain such runaway in the jail for the space of
six months from and after the day of commitment.
SEc. 2. Be it further enacted, That it is hereby made the duty
of the sheriff as early as possible after the commitment of any
runaway slave to cause an advertisement to be published in the
newspaper printed nearest the jail, or in the paper most gene-
rally circulating 'in the county, at the discretion of the sheriff, in
which shall be embraced a minute description of such runaway.
