An act to amend the 153d chapter of' the Digest of the Statuites,
under the title of Runaway Slave.

SECTTON.
1. Runaway slave committed to jail, and
not claimed within two months, to
be conveyed to the penitentiary.
2. Keeper of the penitentiary to receive
such runaway slave, and immedi-
ately publish in some newspaper in
Little Rock, a description of such
runaway slave; advertisement to
be continued one year, should not
the said runaway slave be sooner
claimed.
3. Sheriff to receive 10 cents per mile
for conveying each runaway slave
to the penitentiary.
4. Keeper of penitentiary allowed no
pay for receiving and keeping run-
away slaves.

SECTION.
5. Keeper to deliver runaway slaVe when
claimed in conformity to law, and
to take bond for indemnity; and
collect all charges, and pay such as
may be due to the sherifT on de-
mnand.
6. Runaway slave after remaining one
year in the penitentiary, and not
claimed, to be sold by the sheriff in
accordance with law, and sheriff
to pay to the keeper all costs and
expenses which have accrued.
7. Sheriff failing to convey runaway to
the penitentiary after two months,
entitled to no remuneration for
keeping said runaway after that
time.

SEOTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State if
Arkansas, That if the owner, overseer, or employer of any runa-
way slave committed to jail, shall not within two months after such
commitment, appear and claim such runaway, and pay all lawful
charges incurred in apprehending or securing such runaway, the
sheriff shall immediately convey such runaway to the penitentiary,
and deliver him to the keeper theieof; and the sheriff shall, at the
same time, deliver to the keeper a certificate from the justice of the
peace, who committed such runaway to jail, stating the amount of
charges legally incurred in apprehending and securing such runa-
Way, and to whom the sane are due.   %
SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That it shall be the duty of the
keeper of the penitentiary to receive such runaway into his custody
and him safely keep, to be dealt with ascording to law, and shall
immediately publish, in some newspaper, printed at Little Rock,
an advertisement, describing such runaway by his name, wearing
apparel, general appearance, and the name and residence of the
person to whom such runaway is supposed to belong, which adver-
tisement shall be continued for one year, or until such runaway is
legally claimed and taken away.
. SEc. 3. Be it further enacted, That the sheriff shall be allowed
ten cents per mile in going to and returning from the penitentiary
as a full compensation for conveying each runaway; an account of
which he-shall file with the keeper.
SEC. 4. Be it further enacted, That the keeper of the peniten-
tiary shall not be allowed any charge for receiving, keeping, or
feeding any runaway slave committed to his custody, but such
slave shall be put to labor as other prisoners.
SEc. 5. Be it further enacted, That the keeper of the penitentiary
shall deliver any runaway slave to the owner or agent, upon a
