PASSED AT A SPECIAL SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, WHICH
WAS BEGUN AND HELD AT THE CAPITOL, ON MONDAY, THE
SIXTH DAY OF NOVEMBER, ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED
AND THIRTY-SEVEN, AND ENDED ON MONDAY, THE FIFTH DAY
OF MARCH, ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTY-
MIGHT. IN ACCORDANCE WITH A PROCLAMATION OF THE GO,
VIRNOB, DATED JULY 18, 1837.
An Act providing for the levying and collecting the Revenue of this State.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of 1he State of Ar- 1837.
kansas, That, for the purpose of raising a revenue to support  -
the government of this state, v. tax shall be levied on the fol- Revenue, how
lowing objects: First-all lands lying within this state, claim- raised.
ed or owned by any person or corporation, whether such
lands may have been patented or not, except such as are
exempt from taxation by vi*ue of the compact between this
state and the United States; 'Second-all town lots, and the
improvementsthereon; Third-all slaves over the age of eight
years, and under sixty; Fourth-allsaw-mills, tan-yards, and
distilleries; Fifth-all household furniture belonging to any
one family, over four hundred dollars in value; Sixth-all
pleasure carriages, whether two or four wheels; Seventh-
all horses, mares, and neat cattle, over three years of age;
and all jacks, jennies, and mules, over two years of age;
Eighth-all capital employed in each year in merchandizing:
Ninth-all money loaned on interest, beyond the amount for
which the same person pays interest; Tenth-all capital
vested in steam-boats.
