The Senators and Representatives from your State in Gen eral Assembly convened, desire to address you in a few carnest words in behalf of yourtcountry : * The noble armies commanded by Generals 'Lee and Hood stand like walls of fire between your homes and the enemy. Upon their success depends the security of our firesides, the safety of our sanc- tuaries, the preservation of our liberties. The gentle women, the gray-headed men, the helpless children of our land look to them for deliverance from the invader. If they triumph, we are free ; if they fail, we are slaves. Will you share with them the-honor of saving your country ? If you return to your posts, those armies will be strong enough to drive the onemy from our borders ; if you remain at home, all may be lost. Your absence from the front may impose upon the Government the necessity of filling your places with the old men and boys of the land. Will you thus force the sires and striplings of the country to fight your battles ? We believe you will not, and we therefore urge, whatever may be the causes of your absence to return forth- with to the army, and indoing so, wo are authorized to assuro you, that you will be received with lenioney, and that in no caso will the extreme penalty of the law be enforced. We plodge the cfforts of your Governor and Legislature to secure for all who volditarily return, the forbearinee and pardon of your comianders. 1. Resolved by ia cenct and Hlouse of Represewdatives of Ac State of Alabamain General AsenlUly convened, That the address to Ala- bama soldiers who are absent without leave from the army, adopted by this General Assembly shall be signed on behalf of the two houses by the presiding officers thereof, and that the Governor cause said address so signed to be published in all the newspapers of this State. gApproved October 7th, 1864.
