To prohibit the teaching of slaves to read and write.
SECION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House
of Representatives of the State of Alabama in Gene-
ral Assembly convened, That if any person or per-
lavsi enOt to sons shall teach or be engaged in teaching, in this
e taught. State, any slave or slaves to read or write, he, she
or they shall be liable to indictment therefor, and,
on conviction, shall be fined not less than one hun-
dred dollars and be imprisoned in the county jail
not less than three months, one or both, at thedis-
cretion of the jury trying the ease.

To regulate the distribution of property in certain
cases.
SCTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House
of Representatives of 1e State of Alabama in Gene-
ral Assembly convened, That when one or more of
the heirs of any deceased intestate shall have re-
ceived property of the ancestor in his life time by
way of advancement, and shall wish to bring the
same into hotchpot, or if it be alleged by any one
in interest that any other heir has so received ad-
vancement, and such heir so alledged to have re-
ceived advancement, shall claim his distributive
share of his or her ancestor's estate, and the par-
ties cannot agree as to whether such advancement
had been received by such heir, or as to the value
of the same, the matters in issue shall be determ-
ined by the Probate Judge, upon proof, as in other
cases, unless a jury to try such issue be required by
one of the parties in interest; but if a jury be sow
required, then the issue or issues shall be made up
in writing under the direction of the Probate Judge
and a jury empanelled to try the cause, as in other
cases in the Probate Court-and judgment given
1855-'56.
