sections of which the said parts of townships in this State
have bede deprived, under such rules and regulations as Con-
gress may present.
ScrTioN 1. Be it therefore re8olved by the Senate and Hose
of Representatives of the State of Alabama in General Assembly
convened, That a copy of this memorial be forwarded by his
Excellency the Governor, to each of our Senators and Repre-
sentatives in Congress from this State, with a request that the
same be presented to their respective bodies, and that they en-
deavor to obtain the passage of an act by Congress in accor-
dance with the representation and prayer of the memorialists.

JOINT RESOLUTIONS
Of the General Assembly of the State of Alabama. providing
for the call of a Convention.
SECTION 1. Be it resolved by the Senate and House of Repre-
sentatives of the State of Alabama in General A8embly convened
That owing to defects in the Constitution of the State, and
the numerous amendments now proposed to the same, it is
expedient to call a general Convention of the people of the
State to form a new Constitution; and to the end that the
sense of the people may be taken thereon, it is hereby pro-
posed that the qualified voters of this State be assembled, by
Proclamation of the Governor, on the first Monday in May,
1856, at the usual place of voting in their respective counties,
and that the polls be opened under the rules and regulations
now governing the election of members of the General As-
sembly of this State.
SEc. 2. Be it further resolved, That at said polls it shall
be the duty of the returning officers, or one of the judges, to
propose to each voter as he presents himself, the question,
 Convention or no Convention, and the clerks of said poll
shall register the vote so given; and it shall be the duty of
the Sheriffs of the several counties to make returns of the
votes so given to the Secretary of State, by the first Monday
in June next after such elections ; and if any Sheriff shall
fail to do so, he shall be liable to the penalties to which he
would now be subjected for failing to discharge his duty in
returning the votes cast in h1s county for the office of Gover-
nor.
