this State be requested to forward the foregoing response to the Govern-
oif the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, to the Execu-
tives of the several States in the Union, and to each of our Senators and
lIepresentatives in Congress.
RESPONSE
Of the General Assembly of the State of Alabama, to the Preamblo and.Ree-
Jutions of the State of Vermont, on the subject of slavery, and of the war with
Mexico.
The State ofAlahania deems it proper to respond in a respectful manner, to
the Preamble and Resolutions of the State of Vermont. In thus responding,
Alabama, as a sovereign State ofthe American Union, lbrnied its opinions on the
subiject ofslavery, at the adoption of iie constitution, and the admission of' the
State into the Union.
This opinion has never been changed. Nor has any opinion expressed either
by the citisens in their private intercourse, in their popular asseinblaies or
General Assembly upon the subject of slavery, been changed, nor will it he
retracted.
So far as the war with Mexico is concerned, we regard all honorable etrrts
to conclude a speedy peace with that Republic as having boon made by the
President of the United States.
We regard thbo war in one of necessity for the protection ef the rights ofAner-
ican citizens, and which could not 4b0 10oided, without ia faithless violation vf
their rights by the Chief Magistrate of the Notion.
This question has been setdled by Congress in 1846, and whilst Alabama re-
fuses to be fickle upon a subject of so much importance to tho honor ofNations,
Vermont may. Therefore,
].k it Resolved by the Seatr and Honse of Representtireq of the State of .Al.
abana in General Assenblyj convcned, That His Excellency the Govertnor of
this State, send to the covernor ofevery State in this Union, a copy of the lbre.
going Response, as well as to our Senators and Represeitatives in Congros.
