Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Re- presentatives c / the State of Alabama in General Assembly convened, That all lands in this State, subject to taxation, shall belong to one class; the first quality of which shall be rated at Tax on land. sixteen dollars; the second quality at ten dollars; the third qual- ity at four; and the fourth quality at one dollar and twventy-five cents; and the owner or person, subject to pay taxesfor the same, shall, when h- or she shall give in a list of his or her lands, state List. on oath, to which quality they believe his or her lands belong: Prsvided, That all persons owning laids in this State, liable to pay tax, shall be returned to the tax collector of the county in which he or she may reside. Sec. 2. And be it further elacted, That the sum of five cents for every hundred dollars, be paid on all lands in this State subject to taxation. Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That the sum of five cents shall be paid for every hundred dolli'. value of all lands, lots or buildings within any city or town, to be estimated by the person giving in the same upon oath', ten cents on every hundred dollars on the amount of merchandize,* domestic or Mterchoadise. foreign; except such domestic articles as are manufactured in this State, soki between the first day of May, 1834, and the first day of May, 1835, and so on hereafter between the first day of MV~ay in one year, and the first day of May in the suc- ceeding year; and it any person or persons vending merchan- dize, shall refuse to give in a list of the amount of goods sold on or before the first day of August, annually, he or they shall forfeit and pay the sum of three hundred dollars, to be collec- ted by thei assessor and tax collector in the same manner as other state and county taxes are collected, which amount shall be paid into the State Treasury; and for every slave not exceeding ten slaves years old, eight cents; and for each over ten and under sixty, twenty eight cents; for all free male negroes and mulattoes, over twenty -one years, fifty cents each; for all free white males above the age of twenty one years, and not exceeding forty- five, twelve and a half cents each; for all pleasure carriages and Voll Tax. harness, twenty-five cents on every hundred dollars of their 4
