handle is hein.sag/sagil0031 and id is 1 raw text is: STATE OF ILLINOIS OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL LISA MADIGAN ATTORNEY GENERAL January 30, 2009 Ms. Debbie Shipley Secretary of the Senate 401 Capitol Building Springfield, IL 62706 Dear Secretary Shipley: I have set forth on the enclosed page collection statistics for the Attorney General's Office for calendar year 2008 as required by § 2 of the Uncollected State Claims Act (30 ILCS 205/2). These statistics reflect cases referred to this Office by other agencies for collection. These cases involve a variety of receivables, including taxes, damage to State property, child support, unpaid educational loans, fines, and penalties. Collections for these receivables totaled $331,793,782.89. The attached statistics do not reflect a number of important collection activities of the Attorney General's Office that do not originate with cases referred by other agencies, however. For example, the Illinois Estate Tax is administered directly by the Attorney General, and during 2008 the Office issued 2,134 certificates of tax determination and discharge reflecting estate tax revenues in the amount of $359,150,301.52. Likewise, they do not include additional installments of Illinois' share of the proceeds of the settlement of the litigation instituted by this Office against the tobacco industry, which in 2008 totaled $310,001,623.65. Finally, these statistics do not include $82,087,502 paid to Illinois as the result of the settlement of a case alleging discrimination on the part of an HMO under contract with the State to provide Medicaid services. When the totals from these latter categories are added to the numbers described in paragraph one, the combined collections for the Office of the Attorney General in 2008 total $1,083,033,210.06.
