Since becoming Colorado's 37th Attorney General, I have had the honor of working with hundreds of dedicated public servants at the Colorado Department of Law. The 2011 Annual Report of the Colorado Department of Law is only a glimpse of the work we do on behalf of the people of Colorado and our clients throughout state government. From protecting Colorado's water to defending the state against frivolous lawsuits, the work of the Department of Law's employees might not always be in the news, but it does affect Coloradans throughout the state. Here are a just few of the Department of Law's accomplishments from 2011: My office worked with the Colorado Meth Project to roll out their latest wave of commercials aimed at combating youth use of methamphetamine. We allocated a two-year, $600,000 grant to the Colorado Foreclosure Hotline, allowing it to continue to serve Coloradans facing foreclosure. Prosecutors from my office's Special Prosecutions Unit obtained Colorado's first ever jury verdict in a human trafficking case. The defendant later was sentenced to eight years in prison. We released a Spanish-language version of our popular Identity Theft Repair Kit, making this valuable resource available to yet another segment of Colorado's population. Prosecutors collaborated with local law enforcement and task forces to topple a series of drug rings that imported large quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine into the state. We negotiated a deal with Facebook that allowed Colorado government agencies to use the social-media site to reach out to their constituents without granting the company indemnity and, thus, violating state law. We will continue to provide ethical representation and legal advice of the highest caliber to our client agencies and service of the highest quality to the people of Colorado.
