Opinion No. CV 72-106-December 29, 1972
SUBJECT: NURSES IN FIELD OF ANESTHESIA-Registered nurses may not
administer spinal, epidural, and regional anesthesia and analgesia; nurses may
only administer general anesthetics and must be supervised in the administra-
tion only by a licensed physician, surgeon, or dentist; such nurses under proper
supervision may administer anesthetics on a free lance basis and bill the
patient for such services.

The Honorable Leon D. Ralph, Assemblyman for the Fifty-Fifth District, has
requested an opinion on the following questions:
1. May nurse anesthetists administer spinal, epidural, and regional anesthesia
and analgesia?
2. Who may or must supervise a nurse anesthetist, i.e., physician, dentist,
osteopath, podiatrist, other nurse, et cetera?
3. May nurse anesthetists administer anesthetics on a free lance basis and
bill for their services?
4. What may licensed registered nurses enrolled in an approved school for
anesthesiology do?
