in the Charleston Mercury, between Many Citizens
and the REV. J. B. ADGER.
[EXTRACTED FROM THE SOUTHERN PRESBYTERIAN REVIEW.]
The Rev. Mr. Trapier prepared and published his ser-
mon at the request of the Committee appointed by the
Diocesan Convention of S. C. to establish a conureration of
Black and Colored persons. His text was taken from Col.
IV. 1, 1Masters give unto your servants that which is
just and equal, knowing that ye also have a master in
Heaven. The subject is introduced by a statement of the
fact that the servants mentioned in the text were bond-
men and bondwomen, the property of their owners, and so
to continue not only so long as they both should live, but
to be transmitted, they and their offspifing by will, or in due
course of law, to the heirs of their masters through success-
ive generations.--p. 5.
The preacher refers to Heathen writers, as showing that
in those days masters possessed over their slaves a control
more nearly absolute than any of us would wish to exer-
cise ; also he refers to the Old restament writers as show-
ing the existence of this institution among God's ancient
people from the era of the deluge to the end of the Jewish
